Florida State Council Family of the Year for Fraternal Year 2002 - 2003

Selected at the 99th Florida State Convention

May 22 to 25, 2003

Mike & Michele Meservey

May 7, 2003

This June Mike & Michele will be married 18 years. They have four lovely daughters; Danielle age 14, Jessica age 12, Samantha age 10 and Michele age 6.

Our GK, Carlo Parola, called me this morning and told me that our council Family of the Year was one of three selected to go to the State Convention as finalists for the State Family of the Year. He said an interview with the family describing a typical day was needed. So we called and made an appointment to meet them at home after school. Mike said fine for 4PM.

We got there about 2 minutes early. At 4PM they arrived. Two parents, two vans and four kids. It was the perfect time. It was family planning time. A quick look at the day. What’s coming this evening, and in the near future.

But a quick jump to our visit and the Convention. Michele’s parents are returning to be here for graduation. They must be met at the airport on that Saturday. A phone call confirms that it is Tampa International. So there are four adults and four kids for the convention. What will they wear? Mike is a charter member of our new assembly. He can wear his tux. The girls can wear their Easter outfits. Mom needs to get a real dress.

Back to today. Mom is a full time student working toward a BS in Education. She has to leave for class soon. Dad will take care of supper and get Danielle to dance class tonight. While she is at dance, he will help a friend install a new washing machine. He will also get to help at the girls dance recital. He and the other dads help and perform.

A few minutes for the interview. Danielle and Jessica belong to Future Educators of America. They help at the elementary school twice a week. They are both on the math team. Jessica is the first sixth grader to make it. Danielle is also a band member.

Samantha is a big buddy. She worked in the elementary school bank project. She escorted younger children to the bank. Michelle is in Kindergarten and is so quiet She is absorbing everything.

Danielle won the county history fair. So this weekend is a trip to Tallahassee for the State competition. Of course the family is going together.

Now it’s time for mom to leave for class. And Mike has to check on the presentation plaque for this Saturday’s Blue Mass. Since he will be out of town with the girls, he also has to arrange for someone to take care of the plaque for the Mass. Danielle and Jessica go out to the back yard to care for Max, their horse. Yes, mom & dad bought this house with
several acres so the girls could have the reward they wanted for their excellent behavior, riding lessons and a horse. All the girls belong to 4H and attend classes and lessons there. There are no big bucks invested here but a big investment in family.
Michele’s parents will be here in time for convention and will stay at least until the grandchildren’s graduation. Mike’s mom recently had to cut her last visit short to take care of some business..

Mike’s latest youth project was to get our council and council 11553 of Englewood to sponsor the Amateur Athletic Union with team shirts for the basketball team. In their thank you letter the team has renamed itself the Englewood Knights.

As we prepare to leave the younger girls are watching Danielle exercise Max and Mike is starting to mow the lawn. The girls have set up a jump for Max with two lawn chairs and a rope.

I’m sure we will see them soon. Mothers’ Day, when we have our pancake breakfast to honor Mothers. Mike and the girls will be there to serve their mom, grandmother and all the mothers.

The Family of the Year Award at the State Breakfast, May 24, 2003

In the picture above, from the left: State Deputy, David K. Tebo, Michele, Danielle, Jessica, Samantha, Mike, State Program Director, Vincent Federico, DD33, Joe Giel, Grand Knight Council 7672, Carlo Parola.

As State Program Director, Vincent Federico indicated there are thousands of Knights of Columbus families who do all the good things a true Catholic family should. So it was with great difficulty this family was chosen as the representatives to receive the award to honor Knights of Columbus Families.
