Fr. Sebastian Loncar

Fr. Loncar was born in Croatia, studied at the University of Zagreb and was ordained as a priest in 1937. He came to the United States in 1940 and worked with the Croatian community in Pittsburgh, Pa., for 15 years. After working with Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Fr. Loncar came to Florida and served in Miami and Deerfield Beach churches. After moving to the Gulf Coast, he served two years as an administrator at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Port Charlotte and Epiphany Cathedral in Venice. From November 1970 to June 1977 he served as the second pastor at St. Raphael's in Englewood. He often celebrated Mass in Rotonda and was instrumental in the starting of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

Under Fr. Loncar's leadership, St. Raphael's parishioners adopted Mandura, a village in Bangladesh, and to helped build 100 homes in the village. He started the fund-raising effort with $1,000 he had received as a gift on the 35th anniversary of his ordination. Fr. Loncar's took a leave from the diocese so that he could work as a missionary in Africa. Through a letter-writing campaign to St. Raphael's parishioners, he raised enough money for a four-wheel drive vehicle, dubbed "St. Raphael's on Wheels," that allowed him to travel from village to village. When he returned to the United States, he traveled frequently, working as a fund-raiser for missions in Africa and elsewhere.Out of his own pocket, he supported two Indian children until they were adults. With the help and generosity of St. Francis parishioners and others, he raised about $70,000 for the construction of a church in Croatia. Over his career, Loncar raised $400,000 by his own count for missions.

The Rev. Sebastian Loncar left Englewood in 1999 to spend the remainder of his retirement in Croatia, where he had numerous nephews and nieces who could care for him. At age 88, on Feb. 15, 2001, the former pastor of St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Englewood died of cancer.

By his words and deeds he inspired many to be better, to do better, to live as to show what they believed.
