
FERRELL is a spelling variation of the Irish clan name, FARRELL, which, in turn, is an Anglicized spelling of the Gaelic surname Fearghail (fear man + gal valour) (source: "A Dictionary of Surnames" Oxford, 1994). (O')Ferral(l) seems to have been the preferred original Anglicized spelling, since this spelling is used in nearly all early Irish records. Thus it is likely that the earliest waves of FARRELL emigrants spelled their surnames, Ferral(l), or the very slight variation, FERRELL. Although there are no FERRELLs in Ireland, the spelling is common in the rest of Europe and in England, in particular. According to family oral tradition, two FERRELL brothers came over from England to the North American British colonies . . .
