Some Families of Old Tryon
...and before there, Virginia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, France, Switzerland, Germany, Scotland and England
![]() The People
Tryon County, North Carolina only existed for 11 years (1768 - 1779). The area it covered was one of the first inland population centers in America. Located west of the Catawba River and covering parts of present day North and South Carolina, the Tryon County area was the western frontier of the southern states from 1750 - 1800. Primarily German and Scotch-Irish families came from Virginia and Pennsylvania seeking land and opportunities. Some were first and second generation immigrants, others came from families who were among North America's earliest settlers. They all were pioneers.
By the nineteenth century the sons and daughters of these pioneer families were moving westward to the new frontiers in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky . . . and then further west. Today tens of thousands of descendants of these old Tryon families live throughout America. A few people in each generation remained in the area of their birth. I am descended from lines who remained in the old Tryon area to this day. This collection of Journals covers many of the families from which I am descended. They all were in the old Tryon area by 1805.
While this site is not intended to be a comprehensive study of any one family, I hope it proves useful and interesting to many family researchers. I have tried to provide links to other web sites where additional information can be found on a particular family or other branches of that family. For those who share certain lines with me, you will find numerous photos and momentos of your ancestors or your cousins. Unless otherwise attributed, all photos and memorabilia on this site came to me from my grandfather A. B. C. DePriest.

![]() The Family Albums
You will find many photos and momentos of the families on this site in the Family Album. I would like to have included them with the text but either the download times would have been lengthy or the images very small. I therefore have grouped the images pertaining to a family in the Family Album. Of course there are many photographs -- some of people born in the eighteenth century. There are also photos of Bibles, a 1788 Catechism Book, pressed violets, eighteenth century scherinnittee, furniture -- all items which have been passed down in these Old Tryon families. These are the items which make the ancestors come alive.
Every family generation which has photos or momentos are linked to the appropriate page in the Family Album. The page may take a while to load, but if you are descended from someone in the family, it will surely be worth the wait. If you just wish to browse through the Family Album, click on any of the albums below.

I would especially like to thank the following people for contributing photographs for the albums: Patricia DePriest King, Lillian Whisnant Mintz, Ed Peeler, Jane Cabiness Walters. If you have pictures you are willing to share of individuals mentioned on this site, please contact me.
