Happy Spring to Everyone! Of course, some days still don't feel much
like spring, but at least the daffodils and tulip trees are blooming,
so warmer weather must be just around the corner, right? We had a lovely
day Sunday, the 6th, for our trek up to
Chuck Hanson's place in Iowa. The people from our club who went were Barbara,
Pam, Linda W., Judy, Doug, Wendy, and
myself. The St. Louis club was represented by two members, and there was
a good turnout from the Mid-Iowa and River City
groups. Most of us came home with some plants we bought in the auction
or directly from Chuck and Karen. I bought a Hoya cummingiana in the live
auction. It will have yellow and red flowers which are described as "fragrant"
in all the online sales
catalogs. However, I ran across some postings by people who own the plant
saying it actually smells something like burning
tires. I just hope my plant doesn't bloom until the weather is warm enough
for me to have it outside! I also bought a Pelargonium paniculatum. I
tried growing this genus a few years ago but managed to kill the one little
specimen I had. At this point, I feel
brave enough to try again, and I hope to have better luck. The plant I
bought in the silent auction was one of Chuck's and it's
fairly large (maybe 15"), so I hope it will be more resilient than
my first pelargonium was.
I talked to Mike Hellman, from the Henry Shaw group, and he told me that
St. Louis will be volunteering to host the 2010
Midwest Conference. So we are off the hook for that one, but it will definitely
be our turn in 2012.
At our April meeting, we'll be getting organized for our May 3 hardy plant
sale at the River Market. Members are encouraged to bring plants to sell,
either hardy or non-hardy. We will also need people to help with the sales
on that day. Brad will have more
details at the meeting.
Looking ahead, remember that the May 18th meeting will be a picnic. I
have offered to host this at my house, so you can all come
see my remodeled kitchen. And of course you can see my plants, too. I
hope to have many of them repotted by then. Hope to see
you at the meeting!
