The Society has had a strong history of Cartography from the
beginning and used various sources for maps before the Cartography Department was
established in 1915. This is a montage of the oldest map in an issue (Oct. 1889) showing
it as a US Geological Survey Map. Other sources were used as
well.

Pictured at left is the most common style map index. The 1918 index
to the map "Western Theater of War" (below) is generally accepted as the first
one known to have been published.
