Not only can we save the Gaviota Coast, it is our duty to save it!

The National Park Service has completed a two-year study to determine the feasibility of adding the Gaviota Coast to the National Park System as a National Seashore. The good news is that the National Park Service has determined that the Gaviota coast is "Nationally Significant" meeting all four of the NPS criteria for national significance. The park service also determined that, "The area is "suitable for inclusion" in the National Park System, as it represents natural and cultural resource types that are not already adequately represented in the system or protected by another land managing entity." The bad news is that the NPS does not consider the area "a feasible addition" to the park system because of "strong opposition from study area landowners." And because, "the NPS is not able to undertake new responsibilities of this cost and magnitude, given current national financial priorities." The park service suggested alternatives are 1.) No Action, or 2). Enhanced local and state action. Some Gaviota coast landowners oppose any and all attempts to save the Gaviota coast. As it is, it would cost close to $200 million dollars to purchase land that is currently for sale on the Gaviota coast. Landowners on the Gaviota coast, speculators and elitists among them, have, to my knowledge, offered no rational alternatives for preserving the coast.

Santa Barbara County's Gaviota Coast represents the last significant stretch of relatively undeveloped coastal land of this magnitude remaining in Southern California.Working together, we can save Santa Barbara County's unspoiled coast line! You too can help save our disappearing coastline. California's future is in our hands. Get involved, become concerned, get educated. The future, your childrens future depends on it!
