Rendokan

Our dojo is affiliated with Grandmaster Eizo Shimabukuro of Gushigawa, Okinawa. Rendokan is the name that the Grandmaster chose to call his school. The name Shorinryu Rendokan translates into English to mean "Shaolin Way Training Hall." This name gives reference to the Chinese roots of Shorinryu, and places emphasis on the need for constant training to become proficient in the civil self-defense art of Shorinryu.

Our staff are direct students of Grandmaster Eizo Shimabukuro, having trained directly with him at his home in Okinawa on a continual basis for over a decade. In the Fall of 2002, Shimabukuro Sensei awarded both our senior instructors with a Kyoshi Teaching Menkyo or Master Instructor License. This action indicates that the Grandmaster felt the level of understanding of Shorinryu Karate possessed by both these instructors was of expert quality.

The dojo in Kent, Washington, was established over ten years ago. We proudly called the school "Shorinryu Karate-do Rendokan Shibu." Shibu means a branch of an association or school. Hence, our dojo name shows a direct connection to the Grandmaster's school and method of teaching, which contrary to popular belief is not militant.

In addition to teaching Okinawan Karate-Do, our staff teaches Kobudo (ancient weapon arts). The instructors learned these arts from Grandmaster Eizo Shimabukuro, a student of Taira Shinken, and Kyoshi Dean Stephens, a student of Grandmaster Seikichi Odo.

Currently active school yudansha include Craig Williams and David Hansen.

Inactive school yudansha include David Stanford, Jr. and Karin Kohl.

The school is located in Kent near the Pacific Raceway. For driving instructions, please submit a request for information using the contact button below. For further information, please call us at 253-630-2734 or contact us by hitting the switch below.
