Thomas Baxter DePriest and
Manda Jane Covington
Thomas Baxter DePriest was born in Rutherford Co., NC 29 May 1847. T. B. died 22 Feb 1907 in NC, at 59 years of age. His body was interred 1907 in Salem Methodist Church Cemetery, Rutherford Co., NC.
After serving in the Civil War, T. B. returned to his native Rutherford County to find Reconstruction was quite rough and turbulent there with Klan violence being commonplace. He therefore chose to start a store and live in neighboring Cleveland County. He bought 25 acres, a store and a two-room cabin in New House, Cleveland County, NC. T. B. was a merchant and farmer. It was in Cleveland County he met Mandy Covington who lived nearby.
He married Manda Jane Covington 19 Sep 1876. After their marriage T. B. and Mandy built a new home on their land. According the family lore, this new house was where the community of New House acquired its name.
Mandy Covington was born in Rutherford Co., NC 28 Sep 1855. Mandy Covington was the daughter of William Covington and Mary Rincie Green. Mandy Covington died 18 Feb 1945 in NC, at 89 years of age. Her body was interred 1945 in Salem Methodist Church Cemetery, Rutherford Co., NC. According to the notes of A.B.C. DePriest, her given name was Manda Jane, not Amanda Jane. She was called "Mandy". She married Thomas Baxter DePriest in Cleveland Co., NC, 19 Sep 1876. After Tom died, Mandy married a man named Ware, but she did not live with him long. Though they never divorced, she insisted that she be called Mrs. DePriest, not Mrs. Ware.

i. William Wesley DePriest was born in Cleveland Co., NC 8 July 1877. Billy died 13 June 1965 in Rutherford Co., NC, at 87 years of age. His body was interred in Cleveland County, NC at Rehobeth Methodist Cemetery. He married Minnie Philbeck. Minnie was born in Rutherford Co., NC 24 May 1877. Minnie was the daughter of Gaither Philbeck and Mary Jane Magness. Minnie died 26 February 1968 in Rutherford Co., NC, at 90 years of age. Her body was interred in Cleveland County, NC at Rehobeth Methodist Cemetery.

Bessie Beatrice DePriest was born in Cleveland Co., NC 1879. Bessie died 1952 in NC, at 73 years of age. Her body was interred in Cleveland County, NC at Sandy Plains Baptist Cemetery. Like her father, Bessie was also a merchant. She and her brother Clarence operated a store in Ellenboro. After Clarence moved to Polkville, Bessie continued to operate the Ellenboro store.

Like her father, Bessie was also a merchant. She and her brother Clarence operated a store in Ellenboro. After Clarence moved to Polkville, Bessie continued to operate the Ellenboro store. iv.Thomas Cone DePriest was born in Cleveland County, NC 17 July 1883. Cone died 5 January 1970 in Rutherford Co., NC, at 86 years of age. His body was interred in Rutherford Co., NC, Round Hill Baptist Cemetery. He married Mrs. Emma Jane Goforth Stallings, widow of Fred M. Stallings on 29 Nov 1947. Emma was born November 4, 1888. She died February 16, 1989 at 100 years of age. Her body was terred in Rutherford Co., NC, Round Hill Baptist Cemetery.
