William Canselor DePriest and
Rebecca Myra Baber

     

William Canselor DePriest was born in Rutherford Co., NC 29 Jun 1818.  William died 1 April 1897 in Rutherford Co., NC, at 78 years of age.  His body was interred in Rutherford Co., NC, Salem Methodist Church Cemetery.  
He married Rebecca Myra Baber before 1841.  Rebecca was born in Rutherford Co., NC 8 October 1824.  Rebecca was the daughter of James G.  Baber, Jr.  and Catherine B.  Bell.  Rebecca died 22 June 1899 at 74 years of age.  Her body was interred in Rutherford Co., NC, Salem Methodist Church Cemetery.  
William was a farmer and miller.  He and Rebecca lived near Oak Springs, Rutherford Co., NC until the 1870s.  The 1880 census shows they moved to Cleveland County during the prior decade.
The Civil War and Reconstruction Period had a great impact on the DePriest family.  While the DePriests were not strong proponents of slavery, they did believe strongly in "states rights" and self determination.  William's older sons all fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War and William himself was active against "carpetbagger Republicans" after the war.  For these activities he was convicted for the crime of conspiracy in federal court in Raleigh, NC 3 October 1871.  On 21 March 1873 President Ulysses S.  Grant granted him a presidential pardon.  This original pardon in now in the possession of Tom DePriest, Washington, DC.  A.B.C. DePriest said the activity concerned was connected to a KKK horse rustling raid.  
William Canselor DePriest and Rebecca M.  Baber had the following children:

 i.    James R.  DePriest was born in Rutherford Co., NC 25 February 1841.  James died 14 February 1864 from an accident in the Civil War, at 22 years of age.  His body was interred in Rutherford Co., NC, Salem Methodist Church Cemetery.  He served in the 34th NC Infantry, C.S.A..
 ii.  John Gray Bynum DePriest was born in Rutherford Co., NC Aug 1842. Bine died 29 June 1922 at 79 years of age.  His body was interred at Sunshine Methodist Cemetery in Rutrherford Co., NC.  He served in Company I, 50th North Carolina Regiment during the Civil War.  Bine married three times.  First he married Rebecca Elizabeth Harrison 24 February 1861.  She was born about 1840 and died after 1886.  Rebecca was the daughter of Edward Harrison and Cynthia Martha McCurry.  Bine and Rebecca were divorced before 1868. He married  Mary E. Carpenter in 1870. Mary was born 12 November 1849. Mary died 28 January 1907 at 57 years of age.  She is buried at Salem Methodist Cemetery, Rutherford Co., NC.  Mary was the daughter of John and Elvira Carpenter.  Third, Bine married Ella Mae Jackson in 1910.  Ella was born 13 May 1893.  She died 31 May 1990.  She is buried at Cedar Grove Methodist Church.  She was the daughter of Robert Jackson and Julie Malinda Lookadoo.
 iii. Thomas Baxter DePriest was born 29 May 1847.  
 iv. Mary Catherine DePriest  was born in Rutherford Co., NC 12 November 1849.  Kate died 28 January 1907 at 57 years of age.  She married  Abel F. Hoyle about 1875.  They lived near Lawndale in Cleveland County, NC.  Kate's full name may have been Margaret Catherine.
 v.    Adolphus L.  DePriest  was born 5 May 1851.  Adolphus died 12 May 1874 at 23 years of age.  His body was interred in Rutherford Co., NC, Salem Methodist Church Cemetery.  He was convicted in 1871 of KKK activities and sentenced to serve three years in federal prison.  While in prison he contracted consumption and died shortly after his release.  
 vi.  Joseph L.  DePriest was born in Rutherford Co., NC 27 May 1853.  Joseph died 20 August 1949 at 96 years of age.  His body was interred in Rutherford Co., NC, Cedar Grove Methodist Cemetery.  He married  Jessie Bennette DePriest about 1879.  She was the daughter of Benjamin F. DePriest and Louisa Jane Brooks and the granddaughter of Anna DePriest.  Jessie was born 19 June 1853.  Her body was interred 22 July 1939 in Rutherford Co., NC, Cedar Grove Cemetery.  
 vii.George W.  DePriest was born in Rutherford Co., NC 13 July 1855.  George died 25 September 1947 at 92 years of age.  He married twice.  He married Dulcenia Caroline Carson in 1882. Carrie was born 1859.  She died 1887 at 28 years of age.  He then married Carrie's first cousin  Jamima Carson about 1888.  Jamima was born 30 November 1861.  Jamima died 29 June 1943 at 81 years of age.  Carrie and Jamima were the granddaughters of James W. Carson and Catherine Canselor  and second cousins to George. George was the postmaster in Shelby, NC for many years.  
 viii.Martha Jane DePriest was born in Rutherford Co., NC 15 April 1861.  Mattie died 29 December 1941 in Cleveland Co., NC, at 80 years of age.  She married  David Anderson Cline about 1877.  David was born 25 January 1853.  David died 13 April 1908 at 55 years of age. They lived near Lawndale in Cleveland County, NC.
