William DePriest and
Juliana Margaret Canselor

William DePriest was born in Rutherford Co., NC 10 Aug 1785.  William died 21 Jun 1876 in Cleveland Co., NC, at 90 years of age.
He married Julian(a) Margaret Canselor in Rutherford Co., NC, 30 Dec 1809.  Margaret was born before 1795.  Margaret was the daughter of John Canselor and Margaretha Barbara Rudisill.  Margaret died about 1844 in Rutherford Co., NC.  On all legal documents she used her first name Julian or Juliana.  On personal documents, such as placing her name in her books, she used Margaret.  This would be according to the German custom of being known by one's middle name.  Although she was the fourth generation in America on her both sides of her family, she was of the first generation to speak English as her first language - and of the first generation to marry outside the German community.  Margaret's will was probated in Rutherford Co., NC, 1851.
Apparently Margaret received the "Canselor German Bible" (German Catechisms) from her mother. The names and birth dates of her first four children were written in the Canselor Bible. The name William DePri(e)st was written many times in the book, much as a young girl would write the name of her boyfriend. Her name, however, does not appear in this book. The name "Margaret DuPrisst" is written in the front of Asbury's Journal (1820) in the same handwriting. The birth of J. R. DePriest is also recorded in this book in the same handwriting. The complete list of children and their birth dates is on an inserted paper in the Canselor Bible in a different hand, presumably that of Elizabeth DePriest, who was given the bible by her mother.
William and Margaret lived on Cherry Mountain in Rutherford County, NC.
