James G. Baber and
Mildred Arthur
James G. Baber was born in Bedford Co., VA 2 June 1762. James died 17 July 1836 in Edwardsville, AL at 74 years of age.
He married Mildred Arthur in Campbell Co., VA, 13 May 1785. Millie was born in VA 13 June 1762. Millie was the daughter of William Arthur and Anne Murray. Millie died 10 December 1846 in Cobb Co., GA, at 84 years of age.
From all indications about the Baber family, James enjoyed the childhood befitting a prosperous Virginia plantation family. In 1779, at the age of 17, James volunteered for Capt. James Adams's company in Col. Charles Buck's Regiment of the Virginia Militia. During his two years of service to the patriot cause, his assignments included guarding the Lead Mines and Bedford Courthouse.
After the war he remained in Bedford County, VA., married and began his family. James and Millie's home was located just southwest of Lynchburg and is believed to have adjoined Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest estate.
About 1789 or 1790 James and Millie decided to move to Rutherford County, NC. At about the same time James' brother John and possibly some of Millie's relatives also moved to the area. James and Millie settled in the Sunshine section of Rutherford County. Family legend has it that Millie brought with her a doe which Thomas Jefferson gave her when they left VA.
In 1821 James, Millie and several of their children moved to Gwinnett Co., GA. probably having acquired land as a result of the 1820 Land Lottery. By 1828 James and Millie moved in with their daughter and son-in-law Jane and William Green. James died in Alabama, presumably while on business.
James G. Baber and Mildred Arthur had the following children:
