John Canselor and
Barbara Rudisill

John Canselor was born in York Co., PA 1 April 1764. John died 28 September 1828 in Rutherford Co., NC, at 64 years of age.
He married Margaretha Barbara Rudisill. Barbara was born in Lincoln Co., NC 27 August 1762. Barbara was the daughter of Johann Michael Rudisill and possibly Eva Catherine Dellinger. Barbara died 1 October 1844 in Rutherford Co., NC, at 82 years of age.
The date of John and Barbara's marriage is unclear. One source of birth dates for many of their children would indicate they married about 1785. In Barbara's Catechism book, which is in my possession, she signs her maiden name. The book was printed in 1788. 1790 Census records do not show a John Canselor. The same census shows his father's household as having 3 males over 16 and one under 16. John's brother Philip, Jr. was married in June 1790 and is listed under his own household. This would imply John was still living at home in 1790. The 1800 Census lists John and his family in Rutherford County with one male and two females under 10. This also indicates John and Barbara probably formed their family in late 1790 or later.
John purchased land in Lincoln County in 1792, but it is known he also had some of his father's land. In 1796 he moved his family to Rutherford County at the base of Cherry Mountain where he farmed, operated a mill and grew cherry trees. There he prospered until his death in 1828.
Barbara's Catechism Book, written in German, is still in the possession of her descendants today.  While the family Bible (or Catechism Book) proves the link of Barbara to John Canselor, genealogists have been puzzled by records of a Barbara Rudisill marrying John's brother Conrad.   According to this author's grandfather, A.B.C. DePriest, Barbara left her husband John and their children to  with his brother.
In later years she did return to John and is buried beside him on their farm in Rutherford County, NC.  The  disgrace and pain she brought upon her family is why her Bible is known as the Canselor Bible, not the Rudisill Bible.
John Canselor and Margaretha Barbara Rudisill had the following children:

 i.  Philip Canselor. Philip died 17 Oct 1836 in Macon Co., NC. He married Marion Johnson in Rutherford Co., NC 10 Oct 1818. Mary was born 1800 in Rutherford Co., NC. She died after 1870 in Macon Co., NC. Mary was the daughter of Daniel Johnson and Mary Morton. Philip and Mary lived in Rutherford County until 1836 when they moved to Macon County in the Appalachian Mountains.
ii.  Catherine Canselor was born 1791. Catherine died 1867 in Rutherford Co., NC, at 76 years of age. She married James W. Carson in Rutherford Co., NC 15 February 1814. James was born 23 December 1789 in Rutherford Co., NC. He was the son of General John G. Carson and Mary Withrow. He died 24 October 1846. James was sheriff of Rutherford County from 1838-1842.
iv.  Elizabeth Canselor was born in Rutherford Co., NC 1803. She married Daniel Johnson, Jr. about 1820. Daniel was born in Rutherford Co., NC 20 May 1797. Daniel was the son of Daniel Johnson and Mary Morton. Elizabeth and Daniel apparently moved westward with her brother Philip in the 1830s. By 1850 they were in Monroe Co., TN where they lived until their deaths in the 1870s.
