Bottlenose Dolphin Page
Bottlenose Dolphin are very commonly seen along the coast of California and are often very close to shore. I have seen them while out on Whale Watching boats as well as from shore including many times while at the Gray Whale Census. Sometimes simply swimming and sometimes leaping and jumping with Dolphin acrobatics. Regardless of what they are doing they are always a joy to watch.
Most of the pictures on this page are of Bottlenose we observed from a Whale Watching trip out of Newport Beach in February of 2004. They were mostly feeding but did stop to play with the boat.

This is a little distorted by the water but this is two Bottlenose Dolphin bow riding in March of 2002 on one of my Whale Watching trips. Bottlenose, like many other species of Dolphin, love to ride the bow wave of boats. You can see how they will deliberately turn and swin to the boat to do so. They like to play in the wake off the back also but I don't usually see that because I'm always on the front of the boat!
Bottlenose Dolphin in the southern California area have also been known to interact and swim up to surfers.

I've not been lucky enough to capture a real nice picture of a leaping Dolphin!
