Fin Whale arching for deep dive
Fin Whales are not a common sighting off of Southern California (though we were spotting them on a regular basis at the Gray Whale Census a couple of years ago).
The above three photos are of the same Fin Whale we encountered while Whale Watching out of Newport during the Gray Whale Migration. This is the first Fin Whale I had seen. I have since seen them numerous times at the Census from the shoreline of Palos Verdes however they are not usually in very close.

~Fin Whales~
This is a Whale we saw on 11/29/03 out of Newport identified by crew as a juvenile Fin Whale. I think it's possible it may have been a Bryde's Whale.
Not only was the Whale smaller then a Fin but it had a taller dorsal especially in relation to body size with a more falcate shape to it. I may just be wishful thinking since I like to see different species but I really didn't think this was a Fin Whale when I saw it. Bryde's and Fins are very close in appearance.
