OK I am aware that this does not really qualify as a B-Movie,
but since it's a parody of the genre I felt it shouldn't be left out. Gene
Wilder and Mel Brooks brought this classic to the screen in 1974 and it
is still every bit as funny today. Shot in black & white and using some
of the original Frankenstein props this movie has the most authentic feel
of any parody I've seen.
Dr. Fredrick Frankenstein (it's pronounced Fronkensteen) is a medical
school professor and a talented brain surgeon. Freddy hates his family name
and will verbally attack anyone who even mentions that he is related to the
infamous Vicor Frankenstein. Freddy is visited by a man named Falkstein who
brings him the will of his great grandfather. Freddy has inherited his great
grandfathers castle in Trasnylvania and must go travel there to close the
family buissiness.
Once in Transylvania, Freddy is greeted by Igor (pronounced eyegor) and
Inga. The three arrive to find Frau Blucher has prepared their rooms so they
can turn in from the long journey. Freddy is awakened by Inga and some very
strange music "coming from behind ze bookcase". After some fun attempting
to get the bookcase open, Freddy and Inga follow a passageway to a series
of rooms. In the first room Freddy runs into Igor and they eventually discover
the famous lab. The only clue left for them is a light coming from behind
a door. Inside the final room are a fresly put out cigar, the violin used
to play the music and the book of notes that Victor wrote while creating
the first monster.
After reading the book Freddy decides that his great grandfather wasn't
a complete nut and that the experement could work. They begin the task by
digging up a very large body and prepare it for the last component, a brain.
Freddy decides to use the brain of the scientist Hans Delbruck, but the brain
is destroyed when Igor drops it. Igor simply takes the next brian on the
self and fails to notice that it's abnormal. Freddy fails to bring the creature
to life and throws a tempter tantrum. After a very funny dinner scene we
find out that the monster is in fact alive. The monster panics when a match
is lit and attacks Freddy. Inga sedates the monster after a game of charades
and Freddy learns the brain is not Hans Delbruck. I don't nomally quote
a script like this but it's my favorite part of the movie.
Freddy: Now that brain that you gave me was it Hans Delbrucks?
Igor: No
F: Ah Good. Ah... Would you mind telling me whose brain
I did put in?
I: And you won't be angry?
F: I will NOT be angry.
I: Abby Someone.
F: Abby Someone. Abby Who?
I: Abby Normal.
F: ABBY NORMAL!
I: I'm almost sure that was the name.
F: Are you saying that I put an ABNORMAL brain into
a 7 and 1/2-foot-long, 54-inch wide. (wraps his hands around Igor's
Neck) GORILLA! IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE TELLING ME. (Chokes
Igor)
Freddy's attack on Igor is interrupted by Inspector Kemp. Freddy shares
a game of darts as he attempts to convince Kemp that there is no monster
and that he has no intention of following his grandfathers work. Upon returning
to the lab Freddy, Inga and Igor find Frau Blucher releasing the monster
and playing the violin. Blucher explains that the music will calm the monster
and that she was Victor's mistress. The monster bumps into some equipment,
panics and escapes.
The monster runs into a little girl playing and we see that he actually
does have a kind heart, but his body prevents him from keeping his new friend
long. After sending the little girl flying through the air with a see saw
the monster pays a visit to an old blind man. The lonely blind man welcomes
the monster with open arms and attempts to make a nice evening. After having
his cup of wine smashed, hot soup poured in his lap and his thumb set on
fire the monster rushes out. Freddy manages to capture the monster using the
violin music.
Freddy decides to set aside the value of his life and convince the monster
that he is loved. After some training Freddy puts on a public demonstration
of the monster and what he has learned. During a song and dance number the
monster is frightened by a blown footlight and freezes. The crowd begins
to jeer and thow vegetables at the monster causing him to lash out. The monster
is captured and jailed by the police. Inga has sex with Freddy to try and
make him feel better, but we find out that freddy's fiance Elizabeth is on
her way to the castle.
The guard in charge of the monster toys with his fear of fire and the
monster breaks out. After abducting Elizabeth and giving her a night of
sex the monster hears music and wanders off. Freddy uses the music to call
the monster back to the castle and proceeds to use his own brain to calm
the monster down. The townspeople storm the castle just as the operation
is finishing and the monster speaks normally for the first time. The monster
explains that he was violent because he unable to articulate his feelings
of love.
The wedding night comes around but Freddy marries Inga instead, and Elizabeth
has married the monster. Inga mentions that the monster got part of Freddy's
brain, and wanted to know what he had gotten from the monster. The movie
ends with Inga finding out exactly what Freddy got, very vocally I might add.
The DVD edition of this movie is loaded with interveiws,
deleted scenes and other fun special features. A definite MUST HAVE.
