'' CLASSICAL DISCOVERIES GOES OUTBACK ''
Musical Voyage to Australia
Back in the early days of "Classical Discoveries" I played music by the Australian composer, Ross Edwards. Over a short period of time I aired his
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, "Maninyas" and the Symphony "Da Pacem Domine". These 2 works were from the first CD I purchased of his music.
I eventually acquired other recordings of Ross Edwards, who quickly became not only my favorite Australian composer but also one of my favorite
composers of our time. Like other Australian composers, Edwards has been inspired by Aboriginise music and nature as well as by the vast space of his country.
He has also been greatly influenced by a number of Australia's northern neighbors such as for example, Indonesia. Despite similar characteristics, the
music of Ross Edwards has a very original sound while being usually very accessible.
A number of months ago I began to communicate with the composer and found out that he would be here in America for the United States premiere
of his Oboe Concerto featuring the talented Australian oboist Diana Doherty and the New York Philharmonic conducted by Loren Maazel.
One thing led to another and Ross Edwards became my guest on "Classical Discoveries". The program today was a very special one for me. It was one
that I never thought would happen.
In honor of Ross Edwards, I aired 5 hours of Australian music. Like most other countries, Australia has a wealth of musical talent which should be
experienced by music lovers all over the world. I am delighted to have had the opportunity to present this very special program today.
