THE OPENING CEREMONIES
The Games began on 14 August in Olympic Stadium before 20,000 spectators. Construction work was completed on the stadium only hours before. IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch looked on as 3426 athletes from 36 nations paraded in review. Denise Curry, a basketball player, carried the U.S. Flag. After the parade, Venezuelan President Luis Herrera Campins declared the games open. The Olympic and PASO Flags were raised and doves were released. Dancers and Gymnasts then performed. Francisco Rodriguez, 1967 and 1971 boxing gold medalist, lit the Pan American Flame.

THE CLOSING CEREMONIES
At the colorful Closing Ceremony, held on 29 August in Olympic Stadium, the PASO Flag was passed to Santiago, Chile, host for the 1987 games.
