The first women in the
WV JR O.U.A.M.
joined Mound City #6
March 24,2002.
The first women in the State Council of Jr.O.U.A.M. comes from Mound City #6. Sally Arnold she is in her third year in the State. She is now State Warden. Melva Aston is on her third year as State Tresure.
History of The Jr. O.U.A.M.
The Junior Order United American Mechanics was founded in 1853 at Germantown, Pennsylvania in a quaint Concord School, The organization is a non-sectarian, non-profit fraternal benefit society for men ( Councils ), women (assemblies) and their families. In 1999 the National Council Voted to change the mens only Council to a men and women Council.
Since its birth, more than a century ago, the society has grown in wealth, influence and community prestige. Men and women have kept the spirit of brotherhood alive by unselfish assistance to each other, and to the communities in which they live.
Members of the society -- men and women who work with their hands as well as their head -- have unlimited opportunity in community service programs for personal development, creative expression and leadership.
Great success has been enjoyed by the Order through the promotion of fellowship projects among the general membership.
The National Council gives official support to the National Bowling Tournament held annually, which attracts more than 100 entries from many states. A number of states jurisdictions also sponsor annual tornaments.
There is also activity in a number of Councils along the line of various other sports and projects which bring members together in wholesome, healthy competition.
We believe that the spirit of togetherness that fellowship activities inspire furnishes a strong base upon which to carry out the Order's more serious aims and objectives.
OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Our code is fraternal brotherhood in all that the term inplies.
Our social conscience is shaped by the laws of God.
Our civil conduct by the laws of the nation.
Our foundation, an indestructible love for both.
OBJECTS OF THE JrOUAM
1. To maintain and promote the interests of Americans, and shield them from the depressing effects of unrestricted immigration: to assist them in obtaining employment and to encourage them in business.
2.To provide for the creation of a fund for the payment of benefits in case of sickness, disability or death of it's members, to members, their legal dependents or representatives and to issue certificates of membership for the same.
3. To uphold the American Public School System, to prevent interference therewith, and to encourage the reading of the Holy Bible in the schools thereof.
No applicant shall be eligible to general membership in this Order exept he or she be;
A native born or naturalized citizen of the United States of America;
Of good moral character;
A believer in a Supreme Being as the Creator and preserver of the Universe;
Not a Communist or a member of any other subversive organization advocating the overthrow of our Goverment by force and violence;
Not engaged in any occupation, profession or business prohibited by the laws of the state or Nation, or of the Junior Order United American Mechanics;
In favor of upholding the American Public School System, preventing interference therwith, and encouraging the reading of the Holy Bible in the schools thereof;
Opposed to the Union of Church and State;
Of the age of 16 years of upword.
Able to read and write and to earn a livelihood.
Charter
Even though the charter says: The name of the Corporation shall be The National Council of the Junior Order United American Mechanics of the United States of North America we are known to some by many other various names . Alot of people simply call the us the Junior Order .
The Phoenixmasonry Masonic Museum list the Jr. O.U.A.M. under The Nativist Orders ( Nativist Orders AOUM , JrAOUM ) Which are listed as Order of United American Mechanics , Jr. Order of United American Mechanics , Jr. OUAM / Daughters of America , and Patriotic Order Sons of America.
