General Directions for Freezer Paper Needle Turn Applique
There are many wonderful books available to teach different approaches to applique. Use whatever method works for you. I only offer the following as a suggested method that I have developed for myself.
1. Wash and press all fabrics.
2. Lightly press background pieces in half and then in half again for placement purposes.
3. Trace block pattern onto tracing paper. This tracing is used as an overlay for the placement of the applique pieces onto the background fabric. Make sure to mark the vertical and horizontal center of the design for a point of reference.
Tracing paper overlay with applique objects [e.g., circle and rectangle] and vertical and horizontal centers marked.
4. Trace individual pattern pieces onto the non-waxy side of the freezer paper. Cut out these pattern pieces exactly on the drawn line.
5. Iron the waxy side of the freezer paper onto the right side of the fabric.
6. Cut around the freezer paper and fabric leaving a scant 1/4" seam allowance around the pattern piece.

7. Place the first applique piece onto the background by lining up the placement lines of the tracing paper and the background fabric. Pin in place.
8. Turn seam allowance under as you stitch using the freezer paper as a guide. Bring needle up from behind the background fabric and through the folded edge of the applique [see "A"]. Then bring needle down only through the background fabric right beside the point where the needle came up at Point A [see "B"]. Continue stitches as described [approximately 1/16" stitches]. When the piece is completely appliqued, peel off the freezer paper. Continue in the same manner with the rest of the applique pieces.

9. Trim the block to the finished size plus 1/4" seam allowances.
10. Piece all of the completed blocks as shown on the block placement guide for your chosen project.
