Royal Clifford Jones, Jr., has two master's degrees from the University of Rhode Island, one in English (1971) and one in Computer Science (1994). The title of his latest thesis is "Evaluating Competitive Performance with Rankings and Ratings."  His interest in rating theory dates from 1974, when he corresponded briefly with the late Professor Elo. He lives in Narragansett, Rhode Island, with his cat Nicholas.
