I got interested in amateur radio at a young age.  My dad (Ed, W1JES formally KA1WKS) has been a ham for as long as I can remember.  Over the years I went with him to a few flea markets and some other events.  I guess you could say he's my "Elmer".
This year I finally pursued my interest and bought the W5YI Technician Class radio course book.  I studied that book and listened to the tapes that explained each question on the test.  While studying I quizzed myself with computer software specifically designed for that purpose.  By the time I was finished with the book I was easily passing the computer sample exams.
When I felt completely ready I went to a meeting of the KC1RI Testing Group in Providence RI.  There I took my test and easily passed.  I found that the official test was much easier than the computer exam.  Then I had to wait for the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to post my callsign on the internet.  I checked the QRZ web site for it every day (refer to links page).  Once it was posted I went on the air and started making contacts right away.
It was really that easy.  The testing is simple, mostly rules and regulations of the FCC, mostly common sense.  The rest of the questions were about formulas and required just basic math.
 It is really worth it!
