| Amateur radio also known as "ham radio" (no one knows why), is a hobby. It is a non-commercial radio service that is used for public service and personal leisure. Unlike CB (citizens band) radio amateur radio exists in nearly every country and amateurs operate on the same assigned frequencies worldwide. That lets ham radio operators to talk to people internationally. Amateur radio is governed by the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) and the FCC (Federal Communications Commission). |

| Basically ham radio is two way communication using a variety of radio equiptment. Amateur trancievers can be either a large immobile "stations", "handheld trancievers (HTs)", or "mobile" radios. The larger radios are designed to stay in one place and are often much more powerful and can communicate longer distances than other "rigs". The handheld transceivers are, of course, much smaller and easier to carry. The mobile radios are usually installed in cars or trucks. They are midsize, a little too bulky to carry, and are usually more powerful than Ht. |
