Dick Grayson was once known to the world as BATMAN'S crime fighting partner, ROBIN the boy wonder. As he entered adulthood, he set off on his own and chose a new identity. He now protects the streest of Bludhaven as NIGHTWING.
This original sculpt of Nightwing is based on Scott McDaniel's cover art for issue # 2, from November 1996. It is made of Super Sculpey, stone, and white silica sand. Sculpted at 1/8th scale, it stands 11 3/4 inches tall, 7 1/8 inches wide, and 7 1/4 inches deep. I began assembling the armature in early December 2006, and finished painting it at the end of February 2007.
Scott McDaniel was kind enough to sketch this cover for me at the 2003 Pittsburgh comic convention. Then at the 2007 convention, Scott sketched the left side view using the finished statue as reference. He autographed the statue for me as well.
One of the biggest challenges of this project, was interpreting the side and top views of the gargoyle, based only on the front view of the comic book cover. The final design of the gargoyle evolved from more than 20 sketches.
I want to give special thanks to Randy Bowen for tutoring me throughout the sculpting process and William Paquet for his advice on baking the Super Sculpey.
