BREED INFORMATION
In the 1920's, Antonio and Augustin Nores-Martines decided to create a hunting breed fit to the different and rough territory of their native land, Argentina. While many existing breeds had one or more acceptable characteristics, not one of them had everything the brothers wanted. So, 10 breeds were picked to combine certain ideal attributes in one package.
The foundation of this breeding agenda was the Fighting Dog of Cordoba. Known for its courage, tenacity and strength, the "king of the pits" was a mix of Bull Terrier, English Bulldog, Mastiff, and Boxer. However, the dog lacked scenting ability and speed. To this already lively mixture was added the Great Dane to increase the height of the Dogo and improve the head, the Great Pyrenees was added to accentuate the white coat and adaptability to all climates, the English Bulldog and Bull Terrier allowed to further heighten its courage, endurance and tenacity and the Dogue de Bordeaux to improve the jaw strength. The Pointer added scenting ability and the Irish Wolfhound bestowed swiftness. Finally, the Boxer donated an gregarious personality and razor sharp intelligence.
The attributes of the Dogo were carefully refined until the final product was a dog steady in mind and body with an very stable temperament. The Dogo became a highly regarded hunter of boar, puma and jaguar. He was structured to withstand difficult excursions into the mountainous areas of South America. Mentally, the Dogo shows high intelligence and great abilities of concentration. This should not be confused for stubbornness; rather the Dogo can block out distractions while doing its job. The Dogos have been used as Independence Dogs (support dogs for the mobility impaired). Other Dogos have been highly successful in Schutzhund training, military work, police work, and in Search and Rescue.
The Dogo is a great companion. He has a friendly outgoing temperament and is basically "people friendly." The Dogo loves to be petted and returns the attention with gentle doggie kisses. Even though they have a somewhat intimidating appearance, the Dogo will get along with strangers as long as they do not pose a threat to the dog or his owner. As far as Dogos with children, they mix easily, and the Dogo will tolerate almost anything from a child. The main problem people have is dog aggression. However, this can be handled by early socialization. The dog must be taught good judgment. He has to learn what behavior is appropriate for a situation. His instincts are strong but can be moderated.

DOGOS AND CHILDREN
Dogos are great with children. Dogos love children, very tolerant and withstand a lot of abuse. However, remember that the Dogo is a large breed and should be socialized as well as supervised.

BEHAVIOUR AND TEMPERMENT
It is cheerful, frank, humble, friendly, and not a hard barker, always conscious of its power. It should never be aggressive, a trait that should be severely observed, Its domineering attitude makes it continuously compete for territory with specimens of the same sex, most noticeable behavior in males. As a hunter, it is smart, silent, courageous and brave.
