Activities: Hike - Lava Viewing with Trekking Hawaii !

Lava Viewing

These photos were taken in July 2002. Recently (May 04) the surface flows are again close to the end of Chain of Craters road making for easy access viewing. These photos were taken July 20th 02 and show the end of Chain of Craters road, previously covered by the flow in 1995, being newly covered and the road being shortened by the new flow. The burning post in the center had been labeled "1995 flow".

These shots were taken at sunset. The later views were not great for photos but spectacular as the hillside lighted up with orange streaks and a few lavafalls marking the course of the flow as it meanders down the pali. After sunset the molten areas light up, and the sky glows where lava enters the ocean which would be seen as plume of white/grey smoke during the day.

On this evening the viewing was from the paved road with lava only 5-10 feet away filling slowly like a rising tide. Soon the lava reached the level of the paved road and the rangers ordered everyone back off the pavement as the lava flowed across the pavement, sending fumes that are not particularly healthy judging by the way the rangers immediately got their air filtering masks on.

The bottom photos are the nightime glow from the lava entering the ocean taken summer 01. Many evenings, depending on the changing flow, a similar view is seen, you'll usually need a flashlight to get back to the road after dark. When visiting, check for current information and advice from rangers.
